Friday – August 12, 2016

Good Morning. We woke to the alarm (first time for me) and over to breakfast at 5 AM. Our orientation and trip was to begin at 5:45 AM. We finished breakfast and headed to the dive shop for instructions. Basically, we jump on the “bus” (we came in from the airport on) and head to the ferry to the island of Cebu and the Brumini Resort where we catch the ride to the Whale Sharks. The bus ride was about 45 minutes, the ferry ride was about 30 minutes and the bus ride to Brumini Resort was about 20 minutes. We arrived and changed into our wetsuits and waited for our “boat” out to the area the whale sharks were feeding at. The boat is a canoe with an outrigger for balance. They seat two per board (narrow seat) and hold 12 people on each of these rickety canoes. These canoes were deeper and were equipped with outriggers which turned out to work great. They had a ladder rigged on one side so the entrance and exiting were much easier than I imagined. They rowed us out to the feeding area. We jumped in with masks, snorkels and fins (and me with my GoPro) to wait for the whale sharks to swim by. There were a lot of boats and swimmer so I found it best to swim away from the crowd and just wait for the whale sharks to swim by. I was NOT disappointed. At one point I had 4 or 5 whale sharks converging on my position. At that point I couldn’t decide which way to point my GoPro so I’m sure it looked chaotic but I did get some good shots. Jenny and Mary must have either seen me or the activity around me so they headed out to my position and enjoyed the activity away from all of the crowds. We were called back after about 45 minutes and swam back to our canoe for the short ride back. Jenny swam back to shore. An easy swimming distance. I should have followed her but I was already on the canoe before I found out you could do that… We hit the shore, dried off the best we could, hit the bathrooms and headed over to some tables they’d set up for lunch. Again as usual, we had a feast. How they do that is beyond me. Bring all supplies along and still come up with a great hot meal. FUN! After lunch and a beer we loaded up the bus and reversed course back to the ferry then back to the resort via an ATM machine for some of the crew on the bus… The people we toured with today were Irene & Baptiste from France, Jim & Kim from WA, USA and Dave & Jen from Brexit Land… 🙂 Fun was had by all…
